Director, Economic Development
Russ Lorince serves as Director of Economic Development at West Virginia University, a role he assumed in December 2002. In that capacity, he is charged with advancing WVU’s role as an economic driver in the state through technology-based economic development. The primary area of focus is teaming business, industry and higher education to optimize the university’s research resources through investment and job creation. Central to that effort is the development of the WVU Research Park.
Prior to joining WVU, Lorince worked with Allegheny Energy for 25 years, ending with the position of director of state affairs. Over the years, he has held a variety of managerial positions in economic development, corporate affairs and government relations involving activity in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
In his capacity at WVU, Lorince works with a wide range of economic development organizations. He currently chairs the I-79 Development Council and serves on the board of directors of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the West Virginia Jobs Investments Trust, Vision Shared Inc., the Monongalia County Development Authority, the Morgantown Area Economic Partnership and Mylan Park. He previously served as president of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association and the West Virginia Economic Development Council.
A native of Morgantown, Lorince graduated from Morgantown High School and West Virginia University.
